From the Industry: Blooloop’s sustainability conference, Top Golf’s partnership with Angry Birds and Park World’s Excellence Awards

A lot of attractions might be closed at the moment but the industry continues to innovate, build, collaborate, debate and celebrate.

Forward thinking

We start with industry news source, networking and conference provider Blooloop , which has announced plans to host a sustainability conference in 2021.

Taking place virtually on April 20, 2021, the greenloop conference will see speakers discuss, debate and introduce sustainable initiatives for the visitor attractions sector.

From IAAPA, Funworld’s most recent offering looks at the attractions that have successfully navigated the challenges of 2020, including the new ways they operated under the pressures of a global pandemic.

The article looks at a number of attractions, including Busch Gardens’ Halloween events, City Park in Colombia’s virtual summer camp and Efteling’s drive through experiences for its employees.

In the latest issue of InPark Magazine, Lynda Firey-Oldroyd, chief customer officer at Topgolf, speaks to the publication, talking about its tie-up with Angry Birds for a new branded experience (p10).

Attractions Magazine has spoken to Yves Ben Yeta, creative director at Walt Disney Imagineering. In the Q&A, Yeta discusses his first Christmas at Disneyland Paris, spending the holiday at Tokyo Disneyland and his own festive wish.

Celebrating the industry

Over to Park World magazine , which this week held its annual Park World Excellence Awards.

Taking place on December 8, the publication celebrated the very best operators in the EMEA region, as well as outstanding manufacturers, suppliers and entertainment specialists that worked with them to bring 2020’s top experiences to life.

The event took place virtually this year, with next year’s Awards event set to take place in Barcelona, Spain.



The Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ official magazine - Connect looks at a zebra shark conservation methods in its latest issue.

Meanwhile, the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums has taken a look at Zoos Victoria’s approach to species planning, covering a 12-month project to determine the future of animal species at three zoos in the Australian state.

With populations of zebra sharks in the world declining dramatically over the past 30 years, the article looks at a bold new approach to husbandry, speaking to Julie Levans, senior curator and AZA zebra shark studbook keeper at the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center in Virginia Beach.

Spokes - the monthly magazine from ECSITE, offers an in depth look at young people, climate mobilisation and science centre alliances.

Written by Dr Fiona Cameron, senior research fellow in Sydney, Australia’s Institute for Culture and Society at the Western Sydney University, the featured article asks about how science centres can work with youth in alliances that support broad scale action.

Celebrating museums and a year of chaos

Looking at the world of museums and galleries, ARTnews has taken a deep dive into the Studio Museum in Harlem, exploring how the institution has become a key art space in New York.

Meanwhile, The Museums + Heritage Advisor has looked at a turbulent 2020, speaking to Caroline Jones, director of The Story Museum in Oxford, UK, about the year.

“I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve told people that we’re going to be okay. After you say anything a certain number of times you start to believe it yourself. When you reach that point you have the courage of your convictions and other people start to believe you,” Jones tells the publication.

In Apollo, the art magazine is continuing its series of interviews with individuals selected for its 40 Under 40 Africa programme. The magazine speaks to Teesa Bahana, director of the Ugandan Arts Trust in Kampala, who discusses the organisation’s work to support contemporary art in the country.

Elizabeth Merritt for the American Alliance of Museums has written in the Center For the Future of Museums Blog, exploring the gaping holes in the national system that have been exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In her blog, Merritt looks at the roles museums can play in an effort to protect vulnerable populations, highlighting the work done by the Museum of Homelessness.



In the world of travel, the winter ski season has almost been put to a complete stop. TourismReview says that despite Austria opening for the Christmas period, this is no guarantee that it will be a success and that everyone will be able to enjoy skiing holidays in Austria.

Euro Professional has taken a look back at IAAPA’s recent Virtual Education Conference. The original Expo was cancelled due to the ongoing global pandemic and replaced by its virtual counterpart.

iNTERGAME has taken a look at the recent MENALAC conference - the trade association event for the Middle East and North Africa. According to the report, the conference highlighted huge opportunities for the blossoming region, with a keynote speech from Clive Stephens, director of operations at Expo 2020 Dubai.



On the cover of this month’s RePlay Magazine, VRsenal has debuted a Star Wars VR arcade platform. Called ‘Vader Immortal – Lightsaber Dojo: A Star Wars VR Experience’, the publication speaks to the team behind its creation. The game can be found at every Dave & Busters in North America.

There’s another new VR attraction, this time themed around zombies. The report in Amusement RC looks at Dead Zone: Zombies - a four player experience where teams cooperate to fight hordes of the undead, collect supplies, and survive a zombie apocalypse.

Finally, In its December issue, Amusement Today has put together an annual holiday cooking guide, asking some of the world’s top rollercoaster manufacturers to share their favourite family recipes (p8).
