Edinburgh Zoo’s Giraffes About Town raise £246,000 for wildlife conservation

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) raised nearly a quarter-of-a-million pounds following the auction of 37 giraffe sculptures which had been placed around the city of Edinburgh during the summer.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) raised nearly a quarter-of-a-million pounds following the auction of 37 giraffe sculptures which had been placed around the city of Edinburgh during the summer.

The sculptures, which were part of Edinburgh’s Zoo’s Giraffe About Town trail, were sold at the end of the summer, with the proceeds going to RZSS. Thirty-five of the sculptures stand eight feet tall, while another was four-foot but bejewelled and another was a “mystery lot”.

“The trail has been a wonderful way to encourage more people to explore our beautiful city after lockdown and celebrate the capital’s rich and diverse cultural heritage,” said Ben Supple, director of engagement and business development at RZSS.

“Raising £246,000 is a fantastic achievement that will help support our charity’s vital wildlife conservation work here in Scotland and around the world, from protecting giraffes and chimpanzees in Uganda to restoring wildcats and pine hoverflies in the Highlands.”
