The Bruce Museum of Arts and Science in Connecticut, US, has reopened following a US$60m (€55m, £48m) expansion.
Spanning 40,000sq ft (3,716sq m), the expansion aimed to elevate the visitor experience and transform the museum into a major cultural destination. It includes a new public area and exhibition spaces.
“I think it’s unexpected, even for us on the inside. This is bigger and better and more beautiful than we ever expected. It’s truly a new Bruce,” said Rober Wolterstorff, executive director of the Bruce Museum.
Described as ‘the meeting of art and science’, the Bruce’s collection includes artworks by artists including Picasso, Magritte and Matisse as well as scientific specimens such as the skull of Majungasaurus and an Australian little penguin.
The museum reopened with a blockbuster exhibition dedicated to contemporary Black artists, that showcases the experiences, history and narratives of Black people.
