A Banksy exhibition has broken box office records at Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art, attracting more than 180,000 visitors during its 10 week run

A Banksy exhibition has attracted a record number of visitors to the Gallery of Modern Art (GMA) in Glasgow, Scotland.
Gallery bosses said that the exhibition broke its box office records, with more than 180,000 visiting the exhibition during its 10 week run.
Titled Cut & Run: 25 Years Card Labour, the exhibition offered a behind-the-scenes look at Banksy’s creative process and showcased original sketches and stencils, as well as the Union flag stab vest worn by Stormzy during his headline performance at Glastonbury in 2018.
Other exhibits included a new version of Kissing Coppers, an artwork which first appeared on a pub wall in Brighton, UK, in 2004, and a model of the device that shredded the graffiti artist’s Girl With Balloon painting when it was sold at London auction house Sotheby’s in 2018.
The artwork had sold for £1m (US$1.27m, €1.17m) when an alarm went off inside the frame and the painting was dropped into a hidden shredder, destroying half of the piece before a malfunction in the device prevented the artwork from being completely shredded.
“Cut & Run has welcomed a new and diverse audience, from primary school pupils to octogenarians, from all areas of society and corners of the globe,” said GMA manager Gareth James.
“Every day we opened our doors to queues of hundreds of people waiting for walk-up tickets. Free community tickets and overnight opening hours extended the museum’s reach far beyond our usual scope.”
Cut & Run is Banksy’s first solo exhibition in 14 years. It is now set to go on tour, with Banksy asking for fans to decide where it should go next.
