BBC curates online exhibitions to commemorate centenary

The BBC has launched three online exhibitions to commemorate its 100th anniversary.

The BBC has launched three online exhibitions to commemorate its 100th anniversary.

Curated in partnership with several institutions, including the Science Museum Group (SMG) and the University of Sussex, the exhibitions are available on the BBC 100 website and take visitors through the broadcaster’s 100-year history.

Called 100 Objects, 100 Voices and 100 Faces, the collections feature iconic BBC contributors, images and objects from the BBC archive.

Exhibits in the 100 Objects collection include broadcaster Roy Plomley’s pitch letter for Desert Island Discs and the shirt Colin Firth wore as Mr Darcy in the 1995 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, as well as an antique BBC microphone.

Serving as an oral history, 100 Voices features stories from people who have worked at the BBC over the past century. It was developed with the University of Sussex under the guidance of media historian Professor David Hendy.

Meanwhile, 100 Faces, curated with the Radio Times, consists of 100 photographs, including images of field correspondents, on-set actors and royal addresses

“The BBC has an amazing history which belongs to all of us,” said the BBC’s head of History, Robert Seatter

“As we mark 100 years of our BBC, these new digital resources, partner exhibitions and publications give a unique insight into the history of the corporation and provide something to intrigue audiences of all ages.”

The SMG will also digitise more than 1,000 BBC objects for the first time, for use in a major exhibition and UK-wide events programmes.

Sir Ian Blatchford, SMG director and chief executive, said: “We are delighted to be part of 2022’s BBC 100 celebrations and to be telling the story of a century of broadcasting.”

In addition, several other museum partners will launch their own exhibitions and displays to commemorate the milestone.
