Activists glue hands to 15th-century Botticelli masterpiece

A 15th-century painting by renowned Italian artist Sandro Botticelli was recently the target of climate activists after they glued themselves to one of his works at the Gallerie degli Uffizi in Florence.

The work, titled Primavera was painted in 1480 and was undamaged, according to gallery officials. Thankfully, the work was protected with a glass cover.

A man and woman, representing the climate activist group Ultima Generazione (Last Generation) were ultimately dragged away by security guards, though it is unclear if any charges have been brought.

“We consulted restorers who advised us to use a glue suitable for glass and frames,” said Ultima Generazione in a statement posted online, adding that governments worldwide must “immediately stop reopening disused coal plants and halt any new oil and gas extraction projects”.

The work took 20 minutes to clean following the glue incident and follows a similar incident which saw a man charged after smearing cake on the iconic Mona Lisa. Read more about that here.
