Gwrych Castle, a Grade I-listed castle in Wales, UK, has been awarded £2.2m (US$2.8m, €2.6m) in funding to save the building’s main hall from collapse.
Built between 1810 and 1825 by Lloyd Hesketh Bamford-Hesketh, the castle served as a visitor attraction from 1948 until 1987 when it was closed after falling into disrepair.
The castle is now owned by the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust and, during the Covid-19 pandemic, was used as the setting for the hit ITV reality series I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! when travel restrictions prevented the show from being filmed in its usual location in Australia.
The £2.2m funding forms part of a £4.1m (US$5.2m, €4.8m) support package to aid Welsh heritage that has been impacted by Covid-19. It will be used for urgent repairs to prevent the castle’s central building from “imminent collapse.”
