Unesco recently organised an intensive training course for representatives of cultural heritage sites across Ukraine threatened by increasingly frequent attacks.
The in-person training was designed to strengthen the knowledge and expertise of heritage professionals in the country in disaster risk reduction and emergency preparedness, as well as advanced documentation on the state of conservation of cultural heritage sites.
Unesco partnered with the World Heritage Committee and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) on the training, as well as the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) and the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine.
“An important outcome of this on-site training by Unesco has been to strengthen communication between World Heritage site managers coming from the different regions,” said Oleh Handyn, head of the Department of the Historical Environment Protection of L’viv City Council. “In addition to learning, we have also shared experience; and this has allowed us to identify common risks on cultural sites of each region.”
