Renowned artist Tracey Emin has been appointed a trustee of the British Museum, with Emin becoming the first female Royal Academician appointed to the role in the institution’s history.

Replacing Grayson Perry as the British Museum Trustee nominated by the Royal Academy, the artist was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1999 for one of her most recognised works - My Bed.

“It’s one of my favourite museums in the entire world,” said Emin, commenting on her appointment. “I’m very proud to be a trustee and I hope my presence will be a positive contribution.”

Emin joins a board made up of more than 20 people, with former British chancellor George Osborne acting as its chair.

“Tracey is one of Britain’s greatest artists, and after 270 years she will be the first female Royal Academician to become a Trustee of the British Museum,” said Osborne.

“Having regenerated her hometown through her willpower, I know she will bring incredible energy, insight and creativity to the board.”
