The ‘great resignation’ hits Florida theme parks

Staffing struggles following pandemic cutbacks continue to cause issues for a number of industries, especially the visitor attractions industry, which is now having to deal with larger crowds following restricted audiences for the last two years.

According to Paul Cox, president of the International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 631, the ongoing labour shortage is the number one problem for the theme park industry, something that shows at a location such as Disney World, which relies on vast numbers of employees to bring the magic.

“All departments right now are working mandatory overtime. Some are in six to seven-day categories,” said Cox, speaking to Fox 35.

“Even if they were at pre-pandemic levels, one could argue that there needs to be more staff than there was pre-pandemic.”

According to Cox, the union is looking to fill roughly 100 vacancies at Disney World to meet the summer demand.
