The Peranakan Museum in Singapore will reopen in February following a four-year refurbishment process.
Housed inside the Old Tao Nan School on Armenian Street in the city’s museum district, the museum – a sister institution to the Asian Civilisations Museum – has undergone a total renovation, now boasting nine galleries across three floors, with each floor dedicated to a different aspect of Pernakan identity.
Seeking to answer the question: ‘What is Pernakan?, the museum will explore different Peranakan cultures through its extensive collection of artefacts, including jewellery, textiles and furniture, as well as personal interviews and stories.
In addition, museum officials have worked with several Peranakan communities to develop interactive displays and educational programming that explores lesser-known elements of the culture.
