The founder of surf retail chain Ron Jon has donated US$2m to Florida’s Brevard Zoo so the animal attraction can build an aquarium and conservation centre in Port Canaveral.

The founder of surf retail chain Ron Jon has donated US$2m to Florida’s Brevard Zoo so the animal attraction can build an aquarium and conservation centre in Port Canaveral.

The donation, from Ron and Lynne DiMenna, will be used to build a beach-themed entrance complex for the attraction, which will be located along the Banana River.

The latest donation brings total donations from the zoo’s US$100m ‘Our Legacy Campaign’, launched in December 2021, up to US$67m.

“This gift will have a major impact on our ability to bring this world-class facility to life, which will conserve and celebrate the coastal ecosystems and wildlife we share our region with, from manatees to the tiniest beach mouse,” said Brevard Zoo’s chief executive officer, Keith Winsten.

Groundbreaking on the new attraction is set for 2024, with the aquarium to open in 2027.
