Rachida Dati has been appointed culture minister of France following a reshuffle announced by new French prime minister Gabriel Attal in January.
In her new role, Dati will be responsible for managing France’s €11bn (US$12bn, £9.5bn) culture budget, as well as overseeing major projects such as the €250m (US$274m, £215m) renovation of the Grand Palais in Paris, as well as the layout of Notre-Dame.
The move marks Dati’s return to the French government having previously served as justice minister under Nicolas Sarkozy from 2007 to 2009.
There has been widespread backlash to Dati’s appointment, due to her lack of experience in the culture sector, as well as her affiliation with right-wing party Les Républicains. She is also currently under formal investigation by the French Financial Crimes Unit relating to consulting work she carried out for Renault former chief Carlos Ghosn while serving as a member of European parliament. Dati has denied all allegations of wrongdoing.
She replaces Rima Abdul Malak, who served as culture minister from 2022 and was most likely ousted for opposing a new French law to crack down on immigration.
