A true classic when it comes to rollercoasters in the US, Kings Island has announced that work has started to restore The Racer to its former glory, with work starting to return the ride to its original colour scheme of red (track), white (structure) and blue (handrails).
First opened in 1972, when The Racer debuted at Kings Island, it was one of the most talked-about rides in the US. In addition to being the longest, fastest and highest rollercoaster in the country, the ride was also considered one of the most beautiful and picturesque.
Still operating today, as Kings Island gears up for its 50th anniversary season starting next month, painters from Baynum Painting of Covington, Kentucky, have started work to restore the ride, making it look as it did when it first opened five decades ago.
By the time we open for the start of our 50th anniversary season in April, The Racer will again look stunning as painters have begun the process of restoring the ride to its original color scheme of red, white and blue. BLOG: https://t.co/OkZtUuanat#KingsIslandpic.twitter.com/cV5doTOb34
Originally manufactured by Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters, more than 107 million guests have taken a ride on the classic coaster – the most in park history. Its record year was 1976 when a single-season park record 3.6 million rides were given.
In addition to The Racer, other rides receiving a new paint job include the Eiffel Tower, Backlot Stunt Coaster, Drop Tower, Adventure Express, Flying Ace Aerial Chase and Race For Your Life Charlie Brown.
