Oklahoma City Zoo unveils $35M Expedition Africa exhibit

Oklahoma City Zoo officials and supporters gathered Tuesday to celebrate the long-awaited opening of Expedition Africa, the largest habitat in the zoo’s 122-year history.






Oklahoma City Zoo officials and supporters gathered Tuesday to celebrate the long-awaited opening of Expedition Africa, the largest habitat in the zoo’s 122-year history.

The sounds of African drummers from Bandan Koro filled the air as a curious crowd passed through the main entrance to walk through the 12-acre exhibit that features a savanna designed to replicate Africa’s arid landscape.

“It gives us the ability to have a multiple-species exhibit that gives visitors a look at how they work together in the wild,” said veterinarian Jennifer D’Agostino, the zoo’s chief animal program officer.

“People are most excited that we have brought honey badgers to the zoo for the first time and we’re bringing meerkats back,” D’Agostino said. “They’re so recognizable. They’re active and fun.”

The biggest challenge to building the exhibit – that it lies right in the heart of the zoo – is now a big asset, she said. “It’s our anchor.”
