Prospect Park Zoo in Brooklyn, New York, is to close indefinitely after Storm Ophelia left the zoo under several inches of water, leaving extensive damage in its wake.
According to zoo operator the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), no animals were injured during the tropical storm, which hit New York at the end of September, however, extreme rains and flooding have caused “millions of dollars of damage” to its facilities, including its heating, electrical and aquatic life support systems.
For the past two weeks, generators have been providing power to the zoo while officials have been assessing the full extent of the damage, while temporary boilers will be deployed to provide heat over the coming months.
“We will continue to assess when we will reopen to the public,” said Craig Piper, vice president of City Zoos for the WCS.
“We plan to restore Prospect Park Zoo and its critical infrastructure in ways that will prevent future flooding of our facilities. The zoo suffered significant damage during Storms Henri and Ida two years ago and we expect these extreme weather patterns will continue in the future due to climate change.”
