McDonald’s is taking inspiration from the world of anime to introduce experiences based on its off-brand fictional equivalent ‘WcDonald’s’.

A homage to the brand’s name when presented in manga and anime, WcDonald’s has gained a cult following since its first appearance in the 1980s, with McDonald’s now collaborating with some of the biggest names to bring the brand to life.

Starting February 26 in more than 30 markets worldwide, McDonald’s will be releasing a number of WcDonald’s-inspired products and experiences, including an immersive dining experience.

Taking inspiration from the isekai anime subgenre, the WcDonald’s Immersive Dining Experience will be a multi-sensory offering in Los Angeles, California.

Taking place March 9 to 10, 360 projection mapping and immersive tabletop projections inspired by four WcDonald’s anime episodic shorts will transform a McDonald’s restaurant into a WcDonald’s one, with guests able to reserve a spot in through an OpenTable booking starting February 28.

The experience is complemented by the anime shorts, which are being produced by animation house studio pierrot, with each episode telling a story about the WcDonald’s Sauce and WcNuggets.

McDonald’s will also celebrate three up-and-coming anime artists who have created WcDonald’s-themed artwork with grants to help fund their upcoming projects and a celebration at their local McDonald’s restaurants. As part of the WcDonald’s campaign, the three artists will receive a one-on-one mentoring session with top manga artist and illustrator, Acky Bright.

In McDonald’s restaurants, Savory Chili WcDonald’s Sauce will be available for a limited time, with the sauce paired with an order of WcNuggets, or on the side of any other menu items. Acky Bright has also designed custom WcDonald’s packaging.

“I had a great time partnering with McDonald’s to help make WcDonald’s a reality for manga fans who have a genuine love for the brand,” said Bright.

“From the details of the diverse crew characters to the manga plot itself, I loved being able to use my artwork to bring to life the dynamic, vibrant world of WcDonald’s for people around the world.”

Tariq Hassan, chief marketing and customer experience officer at McDonald's USA, added: “Anime is a huge part of today's culture, and we love that our fans have been inviting us into the conversation for years.

“The WcDonald's universe is a reflection of what fans have created. It honours their vision and celebrates their creativity, while authentically bringing it to life in our restaurants for the first time ever.”
