London’s Vagina Museum is set to relocate to new premises in Bethnal Green, following a six-month temporary closure.

The museum will reopen on March 19, 2022, at Enter, a creative arts hub in East London, in premises said to be three times the size of its previous location. The relocation is being funded by public donations and a sale on the museum’s online shop.

Founded in 2017, the museum began as a series of nationwide pop-up events before opening its first location in London’s Camden Market in November 2019. It remained at the Camden Market site until September 2021, when it was forced to close after its lease wasn’t renewed.

During its two-year tenure in Camden Market, the museum reportedly welcomed more than 150,000 visitors to its exhibitions; ‘Periods: A Brief History’ and ‘Muff Busters: Vagina Myths and How to Fight Them’.

When it reopens the museum will host an extended version of ‘Periods: A Brief History’, which explores the taboo topic of menstruation, sharing facts and stories from history that highlight our still limited knowledge of periods. It will also host a permanent exhibition on gynaecological anatomy, which has been developed with audience feedback.

Additional facilities include a community gallery offering a programme of events including exhibitions from activists, artists and communities, as well as a cafe, performance spaces, co-working space and rehearsal rooms.

Florence Schechter described the search for a new location as “tough”, but had had “so many people express how much they missed” the museum.

“Since the beginning of this project, it’s been crucial to us for the Vagina Museum to exist as a physical space. We’re excited to become a part of the vibrant community in Bethnal Green,” she added.

Joe Ball from Enter said: “The Vagina Museum is a fantastic partner that helps set the tone of an inclusive and forward-thinking space.”
