The Cedar Fair-operated Kings Island has announced plans for a major renovation of its 96-year-old Grand Carousel.
The carousel came from Cincinnati’s Coney Island for the park's inaugural season in 1972 but was actually built in 1926 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company. The ride is one of approximately 90 carousels built by the company from 1904 to 1934 and is among the 11 rides that remain that opened with Kings Island. The carousel’s band organ was built by Wurlitzer in 1918.
The renovation will include sanding and cleaning, repairing hoofs and tails, replacing jewels, new paintwork and varnishing to make the ride look new again. The work will celebrate not only the carousel’s arrival at the park but also the park’s 50th anniversary.
