Kings Island is celebrating the launch of its new themed land, with Adventure Port adding immersive theming, two new family rides and an enhanced rollercoaster experience to the popular Ohio-based US theme park.

Themed as a hub for explorers searching for a lost city’s forbidden temple, Adventure Port opens to the public on June 10 as an immersive land anchored by two new rides - Sol Spin and Cargo Loco.

Sol Spin is an Endeavour spinning ride from ride manufacturer Zamperla, with the ‘golden sun disk’ seeing riders board open-air, suspended passenger vehicles as they fly 60ft (18.3) in the air at 25mph (40kmph).

Also a Zamperla product, Cargo Loco is a spinning teacups style ride themed to look like shipping barrels. On board, riders will be able to manually control the speed of their spin with a wheel in the centre of the barrel.

The land’s third attraction - Adventure Express - originally opened in 1991 and was manufactured by Arrow Dynamics. In its new iteration, the rollercoaster features additional theming, while the queue line has also been relocated. The family mine train features a 63ft (19.2m) first drop and reaches speeds of up to 35mph (56kmph).

In addition to the attractions, Adventure Port also features Enrique’s restaurant and the Mercado Patio Bar, both of which offer adventure-themed culinary options to guests.

“Over the past several months I’ve been truly amazed to see how this area of the park has been transformed into telling an immersive story of adventure and exploration,” said Mike Koontz, Kings Island vice president and general manager.

“The rides we’ve added are a perfect complement to the park’s offerings, and we took advantage of the new area to continue to showcase the quality of our food and beverage offering.”

Adventure Port’s design has been led by RWS Global’s JRA, with other contractors on the project including RSL Commercial Architects, Schaefer Engineers, Abercrombie and Associates, SHP Architects, RE Middleton and Kingdom Productions.
