The Jamaican government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Georgia Aquarium in the US, that will see the two parties work together on a number of projects, including the establishment of several marine life sanctuaries in the country.

The MoU, which was signed by Jamaica’s industry investment and commerce minister Senator Aubyn Hill, will also see the development of a shark research, conservation and education initiative with an end goal of creating a shark sanctuary in Jamaica.

In addition, Georgia Aquarium will provide training in animal care, life support systems and aquatic sustainability to help support the country’s marine conservation efforts, as well as implement an exchange programme, where students and early career professionals will be able to access training both in Jamaica and the US.

In return, Jamaica will provide commercial co-operation by facilitating the purchase of native ornamental fish to both the Georgia Aquarium and aquariums across the US.

The move comes as Jamaica looks to explore national development opportunities within the blue economy, which includes all economic activities related to oceans, seas and coasts.
