The Blue Lagoon - one of Iceland’s most popular tourist attractions - has reopened for the first time in over a month following fears of a volcanic eruption.
A geothermal spa near Reykjavik, the site is famous for its milky blue waters, rich in salt, algae and silica.
Located on a lava field, the site closed down on November 9, after a “seismic swarm” of more than 1,000 earthquakes hit the area. In the days that followed, more than 3,800 people were evacuated from the nearby town of Grindavik, with residents today still not able to stay in their homes between 9pm and 7am.
According to Blue Lagoon management, the decision to reopen has been made in “close collaboration with the authorities”. The resort’s hotel and one of its restaurants continue to remain closed.
“Experts are meticulously monitoring the situation with real-time analysis. Currently, there are no indications of magma approaching the surface,” the resort said. “We are excited to welcome guests back to one of the wonders of the world.”
