Opening its doors on March 19, 1904, Hawaii’s Waikiki Aquarium is celebrating its 120th anniversary with two days of special events.
The second oldest still operating aquarium in the US, Waikiki Aquarium is home to more than 3,500 organisms of 490 species of marine plants and animals, with the attraction welcoming more than 330,000 visitors each year.
The aquarium kickstarted its celebrations on March 16, with a day of celebration followed up today (March 19) with animal encounters, live exhibit demonstrations, hands-on activities, educational booths and more.
Originally built to entice travellers to ride the trolley to the end of the line at Queen Kapiʻolani Park, the aquarium now sits 180m from its original home and was the first in the US to develop displays of living Pacific corals, using water from a seawater well and natural sunlight. The aquarium sits next to a living coral reef on the Waikiki shoreline.
