Government regulation and high costs to blame as New Zealand cruise industry faces 40% downturn

The New Zealand Cruise Association has released shock statistics highlighting a bleak future of the country’s cruise industry, with port bookings set to drop 40% on last year.

The New Zealand Cruise Association has released shock statistics highlighting a bleak future of the country’s cruise industry, with port bookings set to drop 40% on last year.

Association Chair Tansy Tompkins says unlike the rest of the world, New Zealand’s booking momentum is faltering. She blamed government regulation, high costs and strict biosecurity rules that saw ships turned away from New Zealand waters.

Her Association is sending a delegation of senior members to Miami to plead with cruise lines chiefs to reconsider deployments away from New Zealand.

The country is one of the region’s most popular cruise destinations, with unspoilt natural heritage sites like Milford Sound heading a strong list of itineraries.
