France’s culture minister suspends demolition of Marie Curie’s Paris laboratory

Heritage bodies have welcomed a last-minute intervention by Rima Abdul Malak - France’s culture minister - who has halted the demolition of a building once part of the laboratory for famous French scientist Marie Curie.

Heritage bodies have welcomed a last-minute intervention by Rima Abdul Malak - France’s culture minister - who has halted the demolition of a building once part of the laboratory for famous French scientist Marie Curie.

The Pavillon des Sources was the location for some of Curie’s pioneering work on radioactivity and was approved for demolition in March for the development of a new centre for biological chemistry on cancer.

The demolition was due to take place today (January 8), but Malak announced on Friday that the building’s destruction would be “suspended, pending the study of alternative solutions”.

Despite the move being praised by heritage advocates, a number of scientists, including Curie’s great-grandson, have supported the new project.
