Detroit Zoo has a “unique opportunity” to act as a leader in STEM education for diverse audiences, says the zoo’s CEO, Hayley Murphy.
Speaking in an interview with The Detroit News, Murphy, who took up her position in 2021, covered a number of topics, including her role, what’s next for the attraction and what its role is in society.
Discussing the zoo’s role in society and in the wider zoo community, Murphy shared her belief that the animal attraction can encourage STEM-focused education targeted at local diverse communities in the Detroit area.
“We're uniquely positioned as an institution,” she said.
“We've always led the way in animal welfare and well-being. That's something our zoo has always been at the forefront of worldwide, not only within North America. We will continue to be at that forefront.
“I think we have a unique opportunity in Detroit to lead the way in STEM education initiatives for diverse audiences. We have an incredibly diverse region, an incredibly diverse city. But we know that those diverse audiences are not well represented in the science and conservation fields. And why is that? I think we could play and are looking at strategically playing a much bigger role in that because we are in such a diverse area.”
