Attorneys for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis have asked a federal judge to dismiss a free speech lawsuit filed against the Republican by Disney following a dispute stemming from the introduction of a state law banning classroom lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity for young children.
In its lawsuit, Disney claims that DeSantis has used state powers to punish the company, putting him in violation of the First Amendment. DeSantis’ attorneys say the case should be dismissed as they claim the governor is immune as he doesn't enforce any of the laws that removed supervision of the government from Disney supporters.
Earlier this year, DeSantis said that he’s not “anti-Disney” and that the company needed to accept the loss of its special Reedy Creek governing privileges.
“They’re suing the state of Florida. They’re going to lose that lawsuit, so what I would say is drop the lawsuit” DeSantis said.
“We’ve appreciated working with them over the years, but I would just say, go back to what you did well. I think it’s the right business decision.”
