What was originally forecast to be a strong summer for theme parks has been somewhat dampened by poor weather, with a number of major operators pointing to this as a factor for lower-than-expected attendance.
Six Flags, SeaWorld and Cedar Fair have all highlighted conditions including higher-than-normal rainfall, smoke from wildfires, and excessive temperatures as clear drivers of traffic weakness in their respective Q2 earnings results.
While discretionary spend was also highlighted as a major factor, weather continues to be an issue, most recently with the Canadian wildfires and Tropical Storm Hilary, which have caused closures or reduced traffic at parks including those owned by Disney and Comcast.
