A new project dubbed the “Garden of Civilization” is bringing replicas of iconic Iraqi heritage to the courtyard of the Basrah Museum.
Funded by the local government, the courtyard features a copy of the famous Lion of Babylon and the Assyrian Lamassu from the Iraqi Museum in Baghdad. Further plans include a copy of the Ziggurat of Ur and Babylon’s Ishtar gate.
“There are many Iraqis who can’t afford to visit their own heritage,” said museum director Qahtan al Abeed.
“This garden will allow them to ‘travel’ across Iraq and experience their country’s patrimony.”
