Architects selected for major museum projects in Saudi Arabia

The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has appointed celebrated architects Lina Ghotmeh and Asif Khan to design two major museums in Saudi Arabia.

The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has appointed celebrated architects Lina Ghotmeh and Asif Khan to design two major museums in Saudi Arabia.

Ghotmeh, who created the 2023 Serpentine Pavilion, will design the contemporary art museum, Khan, meanwhile, will create the museum of the Incense Road. Both of which will be located in AlUla.

The duo were selected via an international competition, judged by an expert panel chaired by Dr Khaled Azzam, the architect of the RCU’s ‘Journey Through Time’ masterplan, which will see the development of 15 cultural institutions across Saudi Arabia.

“This masterplan will guide the reinvigoration of AlUla establishing a new cultural legacy including the implementation of a circular economy expected to create 38,000 new jobs,” said Dr Azzam.

“AlUla is a spectacular landscape of discovery, where heritage, works of nature and humankind combine to reveal a long and intimate relationship between people and their environment.”
