Aquarium of the Pacific makes local sea life accessible with new species report

The Aquarium of the Pacific has worked alongside aquatic biology experts to develop a guide that informs the public of their local biodiversity.

The Aquarium of the Pacific has worked alongside aquatic biology experts to develop a guide that informs the public of their local biodiversity.

Called the Marine Species Report Card, the guide offers insights into over 30 local species in Long Beach. Developed over 12 years, the report aims to raise public awareness of local biodiversity and inspire conservation efforts.

The report provides population data from 1999 and highlights the endangered white abalone. Jennie Dean, Vice President of Education, hopes the report will "activate stewardship" and encourage public involvement in conservation. For more information, visit the aquarium's interactive website.

Peter Kareiva, President and CEO of the aquarium, said, “The goal is to simplify the complexity of local biodiversity and engage the public.” Featured species include sea otters and kelp, both essential to the local ecosystem.
