Hermitage Amsterdam - an institution that cut all ties with its Russian counterpart in St Petersburg following the country’s invasion of Ukraine - has announced a new name and three new museum partners.
Starting in September, the museum, which sits on the Amstel River in the Dutch city, will be known as H’art.
While the museum has cut ties to the State Hermitage Museum, which provided access to three million artefacts, it has set up new ties to fill that void, working in partnership with the British Museum, Centre Pompidou and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Now, the museum has access to a combined collection of more than 160 million objects.
“It’s an exciting new step for us, a contemporary and future-proof model,” said Annabelle Birnie, director of Hermitage Amsterdam.
“We’re building on our experience in the international field and are now spreading our wings. Our programming will be multi-voiced reflecting the times we live in. We will show major art exhibitions as well as intimate presentations.”
