Accused British Museum thief ‘not cooperating’, says Osborne

British Museum chairman George Osborne has said that the man accused of stealing more than 2,000 objects from the institution “has not been talking or co-operating”.

British Museum chairman George Osborne has said that the man accused of stealing more than 2,000 objects from the institution “has not been talking or co-operating”.

Speaking to the BBC, Osborne said: “One of the things that we've got to get to the bottom of is exactly the motivation of the individual who we believe is responsible. But he has not been talking or co-operating.”

Peter Higgs, a now former senior curator at the museum, is accused of stealing thousands of artefacts, though he has denied any wrongdoing.

According to an external review, the thief made more than £100,000 over 30 years by selling items kept in the museum’s storerooms. Out of 651 items identified by the museum as stolen, 351 have so far been returned. A police investigation is ongoing.
