A new state-of-the-art elephant Elephant Trail has opened at the Werribee Open Range Zoo in Melbourne, Australia.

Spanning 51-acres, the Elephant Trail is home to nine Asian elephants and offers six different areas, including expansive open spaces for the elephants to explore, as well as weather-proof barns and a 2m-(6.5ft-)deep sand pit.

The habitat also features two vast pools for the elephants to cool off in. The pools are connected to the nearby Werribee Recycled Water Plant by a 2.5km pipeline that delivers 150 million litres of recycled water to the habitat.

Designed with visitor experience in mind, the enclosure also features a café and visitor walking trail that connects the different areas of the habitat so guests can get an up close look at the animals wherever they are. The visitor trail is equipped with two overpasses so that the elephants can move seamlessly between the different areas of the compound.

The habitat was funded by an AU$88m (US$55m, €51m, £43m) endowment from Australia’s Labor Government, with several government officials including Victoria premier Jacinta Allan attending the trail’s opening ceremony at the end of March.

"The Elephant Trail at Werribee Open Range Zoo has been years in the making and is world-leading in terms of animal welfare and visitor experience,” said Zoos Victoria CEO Dr Jenny Gray.
