Waterpark resort operator Great Wolf has broken ground on a new US$300m (€280m, £250m) resort in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

The resort, scheduled to open in 2025, will be the company’s 23rd resort in the US and its third in the northeast region.

Once complete, the resort will feature 549 guest rooms and be anchored by a 91,000sq ft (8,450sq m) indoor waterpark featuring tube slides, body slides, activity pools, raft rides and splash areas. An adventure park and a 61,000sq ft (5,700sq m) family entertainment centre (FEC) will also feature.

In addition attractions on offer will include MagiQuest - the Great Wolf Lodge gaming experience where players using interactive wands battle dragons and goblins.

The resort will be located on 13 acres of land owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and will form part of the adjoining Foxwoods Resort Casino complex.

“We’re excited to get this resort underway with today’s groundbreaking and help contribute to the growth and prosperity of this community,” said Great Wolf Resorts CEO John Murphy, who also thanked the nation during this month’s groundbreaking ceremony.

Rodney Butler, chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, added: “This is a development that’s decades in the making.

“This is the completion of a vision that my counsel had from back in the ‘90s, when we first launched Foxwoods - that we were going to be a true destination resort. We always felt like some family component was necessary to make it complete.

“The introduction of this new location will help bring incredible economic value and exciting job opportunities to the hardworking people in our area.”

The Mashantucket lodge is one of several openings for the company including Great Wolf Lodge in Perry, Maryland, which is scheduled to open later this year, as well upcoming resorts currently under construction in Texas and Florida.
