Tampa Museum of Art has unveiled plans for a renovation and expansion project as part of its centennial celebrations. A four-storey new building will be adjacent to the existing riverside facility located in Tampa, Florida, alongside further developments.

The 55,000 sq ft (5,000 sqm) addition to the existing site will include an auditorium, art lounge, event spaces and sculpture park. Designed by architects Weiss/Manfredi, the US$68 million (£51m, €59m) investment will open up the museum to more arts programming and events, and attract new members of the community.

A new lobby area will include a store, coffee shop, and space for evening functions, while the 150-seat auditorium will offer views over the Hillsborough River. A second-storey art lounge will be an area for museum visitors to relax, and will be equipped with a bar to host guests before events begin. The multi-function main event space, featuring a roof terrace, boasts panoramic views of the river and the city, and can host sit-down dinners, multimedia exhibits, performances and parties.

Much of the exterior site beside the museum is being transformed into public-friendly spaces, such as terraces, dog parks, and a shady outdoor amphitheatre.

Construction will begin next year and complete by 2024.
