‘Dino’ Don Lessem to appear on Shark Tank

‘Dino’ Don Lessem - the famed dinosaur expert who advised on Jurassic Park - is taking his army of robotic dinosaurs to TV, pitching his prehistoric creations to would-be investors on the hit show Shark Tank.

The show, also known as Dragon's Den in other countries, sees entrepreneurs making business presentations to a panel of five investors or "sharks," who decide whether or not to invest in their idea.

Set to air on May 21, Lessem will pitch the latest versions of his animatronic dinosaurs to the Sharks, seeking funding for a major new exhibition.

Speaking to Planet Attractions in March, Lessem revealed his appearance on an unamed show and (spoiler alert) his apparent success in convincing the group to invest, also revealing a little information about the proposed project.

“A new version of our robots will be debuting later this year,” he said. “I can’t go into specifics but I went on a television show that gives people money and they gave me the funding to create our new touring exhibition.

“It’s good for Covid times because this would be like a safari and you drive through a park. As you drive through, you encounter different scenes with these animals and now they can have personalities to them. It will be a lot of fun to do something that hasn’t been done that way before.”

Speaking on the technology itself, Lessem said that huge strides had been made in recent years.

“When you’ve got a 60ft dinosaur and you’re trying to run it off a small motor, something goes wrong and they burn out, so the first thing I did was introduce better motors,” he said.

“I was pointed in the direction of someone who works in Hollywood, who helped me devise a system using state of the art small pneumatics that don’t make noise and move smoothly.

“We’re now at a point, if we want to, that we can make our dinosaurs rap, lip sync to music and generally interact with each-other. We can run a number of programs, so you can have the dinosaurs act more docile in the day and maybe get them to be scarier at night for example. It’s very exciting and means we can do things that we haven’t been able to do before.”
