Theme park enthusiasts can currently get their hands on a very unique treasure for the avid collector - an actual piece of track from the record-breaking Big One at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.
Built in 1994 and manufactured by Arrow Dynamics, the steel coaster reaches speeds of up to 74mph (119kmph) and opened as the tallest and steepest rollercoaster in the world, holding the record for two years until it was taken by Fujitama at Fuji-Q Highland in Japan.
Reaching a maximum height of 213ft (65m), the ride still holds the record for the UK’s tallest rollercoaster and underwent a partial re-tracking during the 2020-2021 off-season.
Listed on the Blackpool Pleasure Beach website as ‘original Big One steel running track’, the replaced track is now available for purchase, along with a collection of other ride elements.
To buy a piece of the iconic ride, potential buyers must contact the park via a designated email address, where they can select a specific length of track, which can be cut to size if feasible.
No price is listed, however, the park’s website says that “offers are open” and that the track is available for viewing. Potential buyers must also be able to collect the track themselves as delivery is not an option.
"The Big One is currently having some retracking work done as part of its regular maintenance schedule," a spokesperson from Blackpool Pleasure Beach told Planet Attractions.
"Because of this, we're in a position to offer fans a unique opportunity to purchase sections of track from the famous ride. In total, we had 19 sections for sale, although many of them have now sold, with a minimum length of two meters.
"When we put the items on sale, in the first hour we had sold 3 pieces and had more than 15 enquiries, with these coming from far away as the Netherlands and US."
A small single piece of Big One running track is also listed at £450 (US$616, €538), though the item is already sold out, as is a track platform, which sold for £350 (US$479, €419). Other items on offer include a small set of steps from the ride at £200 (US$274, €240) and a long set of steps for £280 (US$383, €335). A 15cm piece of track mounted on a wooden stand with a gold plaque is also available for £150 (US$205, €180).
