Construction work will soon start on Therme Manchester - a new £250m (US$297m, €281m) waterpark and thermal wellbeing resort in the UK - following the completion of demolition works on the Manchester site.

Touted as a first-of-its-kind leisure destination for the UK, the waterpark resort is being developed by Therme Group and property developer Peel L&P, and will be located on the site of the former EventCity conference and exhibition centre in Manchester’s city centre.

Scheduled to open in 2025, the resort - which is Therme Group’s first in the UK - will span 28,000sq m (300,000sq ft) and will offer several major attractions including an indoor waterpark equipped with 35 waterslides and 30 pools. Among these will be the world’s first ‘living’ waterslides. Other facilities will include a year-round urban beach, several swim-up bars, an onsite urban farm, botanical gardens and a spa.

The development will have a strong emphasis on sustainability, health and wellbeing with plans for an education centre for local schools and community groups to learn about nature and sustainability.

Therme Group bosses estimate that the development will bring an estimated £4.5bn (US$5.4bn, €5bn) to the region and will create 1,200 jobs.

“It’s fantastic to see the site cleared and showing its amazing potential to be a global wellbeing destination,” said Richard Land, chief development officer of Therme Group UK.

“It defines a key milestone for us as we continue our journey to bring Therme to Manchester.”
