A photo taken by Australian Adam Oswell has been named winner of the Photojournalism award during the 75th edition of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards.
The image, taken at a zoo in Thailand, shows a young elephant performing for an audience underwater. The photograph was taken to draw attention to the exploitation of elephants in Asia, which now has more elephants in captivity than in the wild. With the Covid pandemic causing tourism to suffer greatly, elephant sanctuaries in the region are becoming overwhelmed with animals that can no longer be looked after by their owners.
This year's Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards saw 19 categories including three new groups: oceans, wetlands and natural artistry. The winners were selected out of more than 50,000 entries and 95 countries. The winning images from this year’s competition will be exhibited at the Natural History Museum in London, from October 15.
