WATCH: Meet Mather & Co’s new managing director, Kim Kherlopian

Leading experience designers Mather & Co have named Kim Kherlopian as the company’s new managing director. Planet Attractions caught up with him at this year’s IAAPA Expo Europe to find out more

Experience design firm Mather & Co has named Kim Kherlopian as its new managing director.

Spending the last three-and-a-half years as a project/build director at Mather, Kherlopian now steps up to his new role, which will see him build relationships with clients and demonstrate strong strategic and leadership skills across Mather’s portfolio of projects.

Prior to joining Mather, Kherlopian spent 15 years as CEO of Image K Digital - a multi-faceted museum fit-out company delivering world-class projects across Africa and Europe.

In his new role, one of Kherlopian’s first functions was a trip to London for this year’s IAAPA Expo Europe. Planet Attractions caught up with him to discuss Mather, his new role, show highlights and more.

What does Mather & Co do?

“We work within the museum, heritage and sports sectors. We've got a number of exciting projects in the pipeline. We're looking forward to the next five-to-eight years. We've got a really good pipeline of work and so much exciting stuff coming from us.”

How do you feel about your new role?

“I’m incredibly excited to take on this new challenge, as I step into the role as managing director. I look forward to expanding upon all the great work that has already been done and I’m proud to be surrounded by an amazingly talented and creative team.

I also look forward to the challenges of delivering the Mather vision for years to come.”

What projects have you been working on recently?

“Over the last six months, we've done six museum deliveries and completions.

We just recently handed over the Shrewsbury Flaxmill. It's a really exciting project and really prestigious project, so that was very, very exciting. Some really modern tech has gone into that project.

We've also just done Gretna Green up in Scotland. It's a really beautiful venue with a lot of history. There’s been some really interesting design work going into it and it's really worth a visit.”

What were you doing at this year’s IAAPA Expo Europe?

“We came to have a look, introduce ourselves to partners and to potential new suppliers that are out in the market that we don't know about.

Looking forward over the next couple of years, we've got some exciting projects and we're potentially meeting those new partners that can engage with us on some of the necessary needs that we have on our projects.

It was a great show. We try to attend every year and keep our face and our name prominent in the market.”

What innovations excited you at this year’s show?

“There's been a couple of interesting ones. One specifically is The Giant. There's been some really interesting technology that's gone into that project. There are some really interesting aspects that we feel we can use in specific types of market.

There's also some interesting 3D technology that's on show at this year's IAAPA Expo Europe, which is really great and necessary for some of our needs.

It's been really good to meet some of those suppliers. It's also about picking up a lot of context for us.”

What’s your favourite attraction?

“I think out of all the years, the St Andrews project at the R&A World Golf Museum is my favourite. It's a project that's quite close to me. We spent many years developing and designing it. It's a world-class attraction and it's been spoken about all over the world. It was previewed quite significantly during this year's 150th Open. It's just spectacular and again well worth the visit.”
