WATCH: Intamin’s Lukas Spieldiener on company’s immersive projects

Intamin’s Lukas Spieldiener speaks to Planet Attractions on the launch of a number of immersive projects this year, with further such attractions also in the pipeline for 2024 and beyond

As one of the world’s leading ride manufacturers, Intamin has some very exciting projects in the pipeline.

Specialising in rollercoasers, water rides, observation attractions, vertical drop rides and a range of other thrill rides, in the 55 years since the company’s foundation, Intamin has become a well-known international brand, with its attractions seen in almost every major theme park in the world.

Among its projects announced this year alone, the company has launched the likes of Mission Ferrari at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Toutatis at Parc Asterix, Uncharted at PortAventura, DarKoaster at Busch Gardens, Gotham City Escape at Parque Warner Madrid, Arctic Rescue at SeaWorld San Diego and two signature attractions for the record-breaking SeaWorld Abu Dhabi.

Lukas Spieldiener is a third generation member of the Spieldiener family, which founded Intamin in 1967 when brothers Reinhold and Robert, along with close friend Ali Saiko decided to launch the business.

In his role at Intamin, Lukas handles commercial project and client management for key account customers. With Intamin delivering further than ever into immersive ride experiences, he spoke to Planet Attractions about his role at Intamin and explained some of the projects the company has opened this year, along with an exciting project coming in the future.

Tell us about yourself

“My name is Lukas Spieldiener. I'm part of the third generation of the family owned company of Intamin, and I'm part of the Executive Management Board for the commercial market and sales for the company.”

What is exciting you in the industry at the moment?

“One of the most interesting developments we've seen in the last couple of years for immersive rides is more and more the need of having more immersive experiences in parks.

We've also seen our ride systems and portfolio develop in that direction, where we are a company working on guest experience more and more.”

What work have you done with immersive attractions this year

“We're super, super proud of having opened two immersive rides this year and one next year.

This year we opened the dome ride theatre at SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, which we call, for a reason, the most immersive ride experience in the world.

You're encompassed in this globe of LED with 75 million pixels surrounding you, as you sit in this ring on ride system with 80 people, and rotating at the same time. You're fully immersed in this entire globe.

The second opening is at PortAventura. We opened our first multi-dimension coaster. So you have this 12-person vehicle that can rotate, so you can position your guests exactly how you want to tell the story.

Next year, we're very, very proud of also opening with Efteling together - Danse Macabre - which is a totally new immersive ride experience. It has a huge circular ride system with pods on top of it, which can individually rotate and the platform rotates as well. So you're tilting and rotating inside this kind of circular tube. Working together with Efteling, it's going to be a great project.”
