Virtual walkthrough unveiled for Walt Disney’s Kansas Laugh-O-Gram Studio

Thank You Walt Disney, Inc has launched a virtual tour of Walt Disney’s historic Laugh-O-Gram Studio, with the historic animation site set to open to the public following work in Q4 2023

Thank You Walt Disney, Inc - a non-profit organisation dedicated to saving Walt Disney’s Kansas City history and providing a place for art and animation study - has unveiled a virtual walkthrough of its plans for the studio where many pioneers of animation including Disney himself called home.

Operating from 1921 to 1923, the Laugh-O-Gram Studio was the site where Disney and Ub Iwerks created the iconic Mickey Mouse, with Disney developing many of his early works there.

The building itself is known among animation historians as “the Cradle of Hollywood Animation” because of the people Disney trained in the building, many of whom would go on to become the founders of some of the US’s most well-known animation studios.

The new virtual walkthrough showcases the organisation’s plans for the building, which covers around 10,000sq ft (929sq m), including classrooms, a screening theatre, event space, retail, an outdoor theatre, office space and an interactive Museum of Animation.

“This tour of the plans for the building are drafts of what the interior of the building will look like and how the building will be used,” said a statement. “We plan to add more exhibits and applications for entrepreneurs and training in the future.”

Covering one of four spaces, the Museum of Animation will include a recreation of the 1922 Laugh-O-Gram Studio, with other exhibits looking at Walt Disney himself and other animation pieces. The museum will also feature an area for classic film screenings and visitors can also take tours of the Disney KC Headquarters.

The museum will be complemented by the Welcome Center - a space which will feature the café and gift shop.

Repairs on the century-old building started in March 2021, with work halted after a vehicle hit the building in July of the same year. Work would resume in December, with facade work and accident repairs beginning.

A capital campaign is currently underway to raise funding for the project, with that work expected to be completed by Q4 2022. Construction is scheduled to start in Q1 2023. Work will be completed under this schedule by Q4 2023, with the building opening for training, entrepreneurs and museum visitors.
