‘Fly me to the moon’ could become a much simpler prospect in the coming years, with a proposal dubbed ‘Moon Dubai’ potentially seeing a giant moon structure built in Dubai at a cost of US$5bn (€4.98bn, £4.31bn).

Set to stand 224m (735ft) tall, Moon Dubai would become the largest modern-day tourism project in the entire MENA region, with the development forecast to double annual tourism visitations to Dubai based on its global appeal, brand awareness and unique multiple integrated offerings.

The resort’s ‘lunar surface will be surrounded by a ‘lunar colony’ capable of hosting 2.5 million visitors annually. The wider resort will be able to accommodate up to 10 million visitors a year.

According to Sandra Matthews and Michael Henderson, who have co-founded the project, Moon Dubai will feature a spa and wellness section, a nightclub, event centre, global meeting place, lounge and an in-house “moon shuttle,” of which details are yet to be revealed.
