The appointment means that should the Labour Party win the UK’s next general election Debbonaire will become culture minister and will head up the UK’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

The department, often referred to as the “ministry of fun”, is responsible for overseeing the UK’s culture, tourism, leisure, sport and broadcasting.

“Thrilled to take on this exciting role,” Debbonaire shared on X, the micro-blogging site formally known as Twitter.

“Labour governments always back Britain’s world-leading culture media and sport. Looking forward to working with everyone involved.”
