A major new theme and waterpark has opened its doors in Pattaya, Thailand, with Aquaverse representing the first such attraction for Sony Group.

Developed by Amazon Falls alongside Sony subsidiary Columbia Pictures, the park’s first phase was delayed by roughly a year thanks to the effects of Covid-19.

Occupying 56,000sq m (603,000sq ft), Aquaverse contains a mix of water-based attractions, dry rides, themed zones, restaurants and live shows, with themed areas based on Sony IPs including Hotel Transylvania, Jumanji, Zombieland, Surf’s Up and Ghostbusters. In the waterpark zone, attractions include waterslides, a cinema wave pool, drop slides and a children’s zone.

For Sony, Aquaverse is the first step towards developing further location-based entertainment attractions, with the goal to eventually compete with the likes of Disney and Universal. It also plays a major role in the development of Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor.

A second phase of development, called Wonderverse, will be completed by 2024. If the attraction achieves predicted visitor numbers of a million per year, a further phase of development will begin, with the work being completed by 2032.

“Columbia Pictures Aquaverse will become a new world-class attraction in Pattaya that will draw more overseas travellers to Thailand,” said Pattaya’s mayor, Poramase Ngampiches.

“The waterpark looks fantastic and one-of-a-kind. I want to invite everyone to enjoy a holiday here once in a lifetime.”

The park, which opened on October 12, is one among a number of major projects to open in Thailand recently after authorities dropped Covid-19 from its list of notifiable diseases. Last month Carnival Magic opened in Phuket, while Bangkok World is expected to open on November 25.
