The UK’s Shepreth Wildlife Park is set to celebrate its fortieth year with a special charity event dedicated to its hedgehog conservation programme.

Taking place December 21st, the Christmas Hedgehog Ball is in aid of the development of the current educational programme for the Shepreth Wildlife Conservation Charity (SWCC) Hedgehog Hospital.

The event, located inside the Great Hall at King’s College Cambridge, will include a performance from the King’s Men, entertainment from world-renowned magician Jamie Seagrave, a casino and a silent auction and raffle, which will take place through the evening. The Christmas Hedgehog Ball will also feature a four course meal, with speakers including hedgehog-loving ecologist Hugh Warwick, and Colin Bell, recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross.

“For those keen to celebrate this monumental milestone, this celebration ball promises a night shrouded in elegance,” said a release from the zoo.

“As sophistication, culture, charm and grace merge, each will pave the way for a night of opulence as this emblematic establishment serves as a spectacular backdrop to an enchanting evening of fine dining and orchestral manoeuvres.”

Due to habitat loss, the UK’s hedgehog population has declined by 96% over the last 60 years, with most recent estimates putting figures at around 879,000 hedgehogs left in the wild.

The hospital, which opened in 2012, cares for around 500 sick, injured or orphaned hedgehogs every year. Its aim is to rehabilitate each one as quickly as possible for successful release back into the wild. The facility is managed by a small number of permanent staff, as well as volunteers and SWCC trustees. Since its foundation in 1984, the Shepreth Wildlife Park and the Shepreth Wildlife Conservation Charity have raised more than £650,000 (US$842,000, €773,000) for conservation projects worldwide.

Tickets for the event are available for £160 per person, with seating limited to 220 people. Sales close November 11th.
