Saudi Arabia will soon have its first major waterpark, after the Qiddiya Investment Company (QIC) revealed plans for a SAR2.8bn (US$750m, €672.8m, £562.2m) development set to become the largest in the entire region.

Covering 250,000sq m (2.7 million sq ft), the Qiddiya Water Theme Park will be home to a selection of 22 rides, slides and attractions, including nine world firsts.

The park will feature a mountain-like construction at its heart and will be split up into nine themed zones, all of which have been inspired by the native animals that inhabit the area around Qiddiya.

In addition to its attractions, the waterpark will feature “state-of-the-art competition water sports facilities”, along with 17 food and beverage outlets, and retail stores.

The park’s design will also feature sustainability elements, with advanced environmental systems to minimise the use of water through recycling and smart usage. According to QIC, some rides will use 75% less water compared to their traditional counterparts, while any rainwater that falls on the site will also be captured, treated and reused for irrigation purposes.

Awarded to ALEC Saudi Arabia Engineering & Contracting and El Seif Engineering Contracting, the joint venture will form a major attraction in Qiddiya - an entertainment mega-project in Riyadh backed by the Kingdom’s Public Investment Fund - which has been dubbed the “future capital of entertainment, sports and culture”.

The waterpark will join a number of attractions as part of Qiddiya, including the US$1bn (€900m, £750m) Six Flags Qiddiya. The first phase of the overall Qiddiya project is planned to be completed by 2023. Upon the completion of this phase, 45 individual projects are to be completed. Moreover, 300 recreational, hospitality, leisure and sports will be launched.

“The Qiddiya Water Theme Park will be a year-round immersive family entertainment destination, the first of its kind and offering experiences that have never before been offered in Saudi,” said Abdullah Aldawood, board member and managing director at QIC.

“ALEC and El Seif will be using the latest in guest experience technologies to create what is certain to be one of the world’s greatest water theme parks. The park will offer our guests a chance to experience that in a welcoming and fun environment for everyone.”
