Czechia’s Prague Planetarium has announced a partnership that will see the attraction open not only the first LED dome in Europe but also the only LED dome of its size in any planetarium worldwide.
Powered by immersive technology provider Cosm, the renovated dome will feature a 22m (72.2m) CX System LED dome display with 8k resolution and more than 45 million pixels.
Cosm’s immersive technology solution, the CX System, offers the ability to showcase what the supplier says are the “most immersive, top-quality astronomy simulations and scientific visualisations in the world”. The system’s integration also means that Prague Planetarium will be able to develop in-house experiences, such as multi-medium presentations, immersive events and more.
“Prague Planetarium is undergoing the largest reconstruction in its 65-year history,” said Jakub Rozehnal, director of Prague Observatory and Planetarium.
“The selection of the supplier of the new LED technology was crucial for the entire planetarium modernisation.”
The planetarium’s 18-month reconstruction and modernisation will cost around CZK250m (US$11.1m, €10.1m, £8.7m) and will also include an expansion of exhibition areas and a new system to recover waste heat. It will reopen to the public in early 2025.
