The Platform 9 ¾ luggage trolley installation at London’s King Cross Station is set to tour the UK this autumn to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the UK cinema release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
The iconic trolley will appear at four UK train stations from October 16 until October 31, where fans will be able to recreate the magical moment when Harry entered the wizarding world for the first time.
The trolley will be on display at Edinburgh Waverley from October 16 until October 18 before moving to Birmingham New Street station from October 23-25.The installation will then appear at Cardiff Central between October 26 and 28 and Belfast Lanyon Place from October 29 until October 31.
“The Platform 9 ¾ trolley in King’s Cross station is a fantastic attraction that boasts huge queues of Harry Potter fans daily,” said Stuart Kirkwood, group property director at Network Rail.
“It’s been great to take this fan favourite to locations outside of London to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the film. We’re extremely pleased to add this touch of magic to these stations.”
The Platform 9 ¾ installation first opened at King’s Cross Station in 1999, two years before the first Harry Potter film was released, and consisted of a cast-iron sign and a disappearing luggage trolley. It was initially housed in the passageway between the main station and platforms nine and eleven, and very quickly became a popular tourist destination. In 2012, the installation was relocated, with a revamped trolley complete with luggage trunks and owl cage, to the main concourse next to a Harry Potter-themed retail experience.
The installation is visited by more than two million people per year, with fans gathering on September 1 at 11 am to ‘see off’ the Hogwarts Express.
